His Word In Wood

When I was a young Christian, I often felt depressed when I heard about the great exploits of mighty men of God. I thought, "I could never do that... I can never be a real man of God." I was so wrong. I was thinking that it was about me... what I could do for God.

Then one day I read this verse, "And what does the Lord require of you?" I was stunned by the simplicity of the answer. Just to love what He loves and to walk with Him... humbly. All those great exploits by great men of God were done by the Holy Spirit working THROUGH men who dared to simply trust God and yield to Him.

What freedom to know that it isn't about me! I don't have to measure up. All I have to do is to be His. As I learn to yield to Him, He will lead me into true greatness... living in fellowship with Him... doing whatever He sets before me... bearing fruit of His choosing to honor Him.

This carving is made from an extraordinary piece of black walnut. The wood is very dark and in bright light it almost glows with rippling grain patterns. The silver raised letters are 1.25" high.  The golden seven-branched menorah represents the Torah, the ways of Yahweh that He taught us to know what He is like and how to live a life worth living. As Jesus said, the entire law and the prophets can be summed up as "Loving God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself."

A gold border with a cove cut provides a frame for this carving.

The book of Joshua concludes with these words, "Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass."   This was not because the people had earned God's favor, far from it!  They were utterly disobedient time after time.  But God is faithful even when we are not.  2 Corinthians 1:20 says, "For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him (Jesus).

This carving is large but lightweight since it is made from 1/2" cedar.  The inset letters are hand painted with rich, glowing metallic paints.  The 1-1/2" wide frame allows you to either hang this carving on the wall or let it free-stand on a mantle or table.

Let's be honest... life is scary.  Fear is the natural response to living in a dangerous world.  However, when fear rushes in on us, we can cry out to our Lord and Savior knowing this situation didn't catch Him by surprise and He is totally able to handle it.  

Ths carving features 1.5" raised gold letters that are deeply outlined against a smooth background.  The almost black bark provides an interesting frame around this natural wood carving.   Finished in lacquer.

Joshua said these words almost 4,000 years ago but they still resound in our hearts today.  As we see the world around us turning away from the Lord and the resulting pain and suffering they bring upon themselves, our hearts cry out, "As for me and my house..."  Yet it is not just for "me and my house." The Holy Spirit is calling us to make our homes both lighthouses and sanctuaries of healing to the lost and hurting world around us!

This carving is made from a very unusual piece of Ash. The wood itself is a light, creamy color with intense grain patterns that ripple around the knots.  Most of the bark is still intact which provides a contrasting outline.  The whole piece is finished, both front and back, in lacquer to protect the wood and to show the intricacies of its grain.

The letters are raised above the background which is smooth to show the beautiful grain. Each letter is deeply outlined to provide additional contrast and they are finished in a glowing metallic copper.

One of the things you rarely hear from the pulpit these days is a sermon about Holiness.  Holiness is ridiculed as "hypocritical", "legalistic" and "judgmental".  Yet, our Creator and King does not see it that way.  He says over and over again, "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy" and "Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God.  Keep my decrees and follow them.  I am the Lord, who makes you holy."  He says that we are to be "set apart to be His."  That is not a burden, that is an honor!  It is life!  

Zechariah 14:20 says "In that day" everthing will be Holy to YHWH.  Well, I don't have to wait for "that day", I can separate myself to Him and Him alone TODAY!  I am His and His alone.  Am I saying that I can I be righteous on my own?  Not at all!  All of my righteousness is filthy rags but Yeshua made the ultimate sacrifice to redeem me from my sins - past - present - future.  The Father has promised that He will make us Holy and Yeshua has promised that He will never cast us out when we come to Him.

Therefore, I can boldly say... with a humble and grateful heart... "I Am Holy To Yahweh!"

Set this carving on your desk to remind you just who you really are!  It is sure to open conversations where you can share the joy of knowing Him... and it is sure to shut down unclean and dishonoring talk as well.  

Sometimes, amid all the negative messages we are bombarded with, it is difficult to remember who we are. We are not what we do or what other people say about us.  We are simply, the beloved of the Lord.  What more could I ever want?!

This little carving has inset blue-green metallic letters cut into a branch from a cherry tree.  The reverse side still has its thin maroon red bark.  The smooth lacquer finish reveals the complex grain of the wood with quilting patterns around the branch.  The jute cord for hanging complements this very natural carving.

I created this carving to celebrate an extraordinary person.  Late in life she accepts Jesus as her Lord and Savior and decides to follow Him whereever He goes and do whatever He is doing.  At 62 years old, she is selling everything she has and moving to Kenya to build an orphanage and be a mother to 120 children.  You've got to love someone who loves like that!

The word "Peace" has lost so much of its meaning.  Most people see it as merely the absence of conflict.  However, it goes much deeper than that.  Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27)  Paul said, "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7) The peace that God gives us, His Shalom, is His very presence in our lives.  Even when we walk through pain, loss and persecution, He is there with us.

I like happiness.  The trouble is that I usually can't have it because happiness depends on what is happening.  However, we can always have "Joy" even in the midst of loss, lonliness, betrayal and grief.  Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and, as Nehemiah said, "The Joy of the Lord is our strength."   

This carving will look great on your mantle or desk.  It is carved from African Mahogany which is an intense medium brown with flashes of gold and red.  Lacquer finish.

The letters of Paul overflow with the word, "Joy."  That seems strange for a person who was frequently beaten, shipwrecked, betrayed, stoned and whipped.  Yet "Joy" doesn't shrink back in the face of pain and adversity... it is revealed by it.  Joy is one of the evidences of the Holy Spirit living within us.

This is a free-standing carving that will look great on your desk or mantle.  It is carved from Louisiana Black Gum which is a light colored hardwood with colorful markings.  It is finished in lacquer.

I used to feel depressed when people talked about missions and preached about the Great Commission, "Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel..."  I felt I was unqualified and God would send me somewhere awful and I would be miserable.  Isaiah felt the same way.  But when God touched him everything changed and he said "Here am I... SEND ME!" 

This carving is centered on Nicaragua... a place where the Holy Spirit is teaching me that when He calls, He not only qualifies me but He also gives me a deep desire to follow Him... even if it scares me... knowing that is where I'll find true fulfillment. 

This multi-level carving features large 2" raised silver letters above a map of Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.  The countries are painted in glowing metallic colors and the oceans are a blue crystal cut.

If you've ever been on the mission field, you know that you leave a part of yourself behind.  This little carving is a prototype of one that I'm hoping to teach a couple of Nicaraguans to carve to help make a living for their families.  This carving has deep inset letters that are hand painted inside with metallic paints.  The wood is a gorgeous piece of red cedar.  Gold chain for hanging.
