His Word In Wood

I made this carving in celebration of my brothers and sisters in Christ living in Kenya and Uganda.  This triple carving in Cedar says "Yie - Geno - Hera" which is "Faith - Hope - Love" in the Dholuo language spoken in that region.  The large 2.5" inset letters are hand painted in emerald, aquamarine and sapphire metallic.  Two coats of lacquer show off the beautiful colors and grain of the cedar.  A cove cut around the outside provides a subtle frame.

Recently, I saw a picture that puzzled me. It was an Arabic "N" that ISIS uses to mark the homes of Christians for persecution and ultimately slaughter. Why an "N"? They are "Followers of the Nazarene." It was chilling and beautiful at the same time.

This carving is dedicated to my brothers and sisters in the Lord who would rather lay down their lives than to dishonor Him. As I looked at the "N" I felt flames around it. I didn't understand their meaning until the carving was finished.

It is in the dark flames of persecution that the true gold is revealed. Zechariah 13:9 says, "And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God." 

The other "two parts" are destroyed. Those who call themselves followers of God but whose hearts are far from Him. The "Third Part" will be refined through the horrible dark fire of persecution. Not to destroy or punish them but to burn away everything sin that separates them from their Lord.

Our country is saturated in sin. The church embraces it and is enslaved by it. Yes, what you see in other nations is coming here as well... However, in Revelation 2:10 Jesus says, "Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life."

The carving itself is made from five layers of baltic birch plywood.  The gold Arabic "N" floats above the black flames tinged with red.  There is a lot of detail in this intense design that is hard to see in the photo.  If you would like additional photos please email me at Richard@HisWordInWood.com
